In the heart of Dublin, as the winter chill descends, the city awakens with a festive spirit that captivates locals and visitors alike. From the enchanting glow of Grafton Street to the lively celebrations in Temple Bar, Dublin at Christmas is a magical experience that seamlessly blends the city's rich history with the warmth of Irish holiday traditions. Here we share some of Eire’s favourite sights, sounds, and flavours that make Christmas in Dublin truly special.

Irish Christmas Traditions
Christmas Candle in the Window
In true Irish fashion, the tradition of placing a candle in the window is a symbol of hospitality. It's a gesture that dates back centuries, welcoming travellers and signifying that there is room at the inn. As you wander through the streets of Dublin, you'll notice the soft glow of candles, casting a warm and inviting ambiance.
Wren Day (St. Stephen's Day, 26th December)
Celebrated on December 26th, Wren Day is a unique Irish tradition where communities participate in a lively procession, often led by someone dressed as a 'Wren Boy.' This tradition has deep roots in Irish folklore and adds a touch of folklore magic to Dublin's Christmas celebrations.
Christmas Food Delights
Christmas Pudding

No Irish Christmas is complete without a generous serving of Christmas pudding.
It is a dense, rich dried fruit, mixed peel, suet and often doused in brandy dessert. It is traditionally eaten on Christmas Day and is the centre piece of many festive meals where it is doused in brandy, lit and brought to the table with flames! Many Dublin restaurants and pubs offer their own twist on this classic treat during the holiday season.
Mince Pies
Bite-sized short crust pastry filled with a mixture of dried fruits, spices, and sometimes a hint of Irish whiskey, mince pies are a Christmas staple. These little pastries capture the essence of the season.
Dublin's Christmas Celebrations
Lightings of Grafton Street
The official start of Dublin's Christmas season is marked by the lighting of Grafton Street. Thousands gather to witness the city's most famous shopping street come alive with a spectacular display of lights, turning the area into a festive wonderland. The window display at the Irish luxury retailer Brown Thomas on Grafton Street is always a must see. The beautiful window displays each year are crafted lovingly by hand by a team of dedicated, enthusiastic experts. Their 2023 Christmas window display is called ‘The Great List. Brown Thomas’s concept designer Janet Takuz describes how Christmas at Brown Thomas this year draws on this sense of greatness, bigger and bolder and better than ever. With more shine, more glamour and more wow, it is the attention to detail that brings the 2023 window display to life. Each scene in the window display focuses on a different element of what makes Christmas truly great.

Christmas Carols in Temple Bar
The cobblestone streets of Temple Bar echo with the sounds of carolers and musicians during the holiday season. Join the festivities as locals and visitors come together to sing traditional carols, creating a lively atmosphere that captures the true spirit of Christmas.
